Using Web 2.0 tools, the online learning environment has met the need of rural school districts where hiring a part-time teacher is difficult due to budget cuts, location, hours, etc. The classroom uses an online curriculum, blogs, Google Docs, and other tools. The program is self-paced and allows students to proceed at his/her own pace, ask questions on specifics, allow a chance to redo assignments as needed. Also using the online format, the environment is similar to a game. Students are allowed to “farm” assignments, which means they can redo an assignment for more “experience points” (i.e. a better a grade). Students can also earn “extra XP” by going above and beyond and doing more work. There are “Elite Loot” projects that a student can use their new knowledge to “show off” their understanding of the language they are learning. The blog is used as a means of communicating with the students and to provide more explanation on specific grammar issues. YouTube links provide music videos to help with grammar rule retention or more explanation on a specific grammar rule.
