The role of design and aesthetics is often overlooked, and occasionally dismissed, in the multifaceted field of education. Moreover, aesthetics is an increasingly important dimension missing from the current research base in the Instructional Design and Learning Sciences fields. To this extent, we have positioned our work at the crossroads of design and science, a true design-based research approach to exploring the synthesis of technology, education, and experience. From engaging millions of students from around the world through adventure learning to the design of transformative online and mobile learning environments that promote engaged discovery of user-generated data, Doering and Miller will showcase the role of design and aesthetics in the future of online learning and how they are exploring the formidable roles of education and sustainability on all seven continents.
