Video Game Players and Their Online Safety
Abstract: Although video games have been described as offering highly interactive experiences that are beneficial in contexts outside of entertainment, their connectivity has raised concerns about safety. This study examined gamers’ online safety practices and the degree to which they are exposed to online dangers. With the results revealing that gamers engaged in poor online practices, this investigation offers empirical data in preliminary support of the argument that gamers may be unaware of the possible consequences of their online actions, may not be worried enough about their online safety to make necessary adjustments to their behavior, and/or fail to understand how to protect themselves while online. When coupled with ongoing research, these findings could contribute to the identification of strategies that may be used to curb risky online behavior, as well as the creation of cyber awareness interventions and training.
