Abstract: The shift to teaching online prompted by Covid-19 necessitates learning and adoption of new practices for teacher educators. In an effort to better understand the virtual learning practices we are leveraging to support preservice teachers’ emerging understandings, we engage in a self-study of our practices as teacher educators navigating virtual teaching environments. As instructors of discussion-based education courses, we are grappling with creating space and access in a virtual environment for student interactions that support their deep conversations about teaching, students, and PK-12 content. Our self-study methodology affords us the opportunity to serve as critical friends, offering insights, sharing experiences, and posing questions regarding online instructional practices we are utilizing to facilitate learning. Through this presentation we hope to expand our critical friend network by sharing our experiences in order to draw on the expertise of other teacher educators immersed in similar questions of practice.
