Part 1: Developing Effective Strategies to Get that Grant

Abstract: This workshop, led by professionals with decades of experience in successful grant procurement, will explore strategies to develop sound grant proposals. Additionally, effective procedures to manage funded grants will be examined. Participants will be guided in the assessment of their personal grant experience and skills, with an eye toward enhancing their expertise in the process of grant development and management. Attention will be paid to both government-based and private funding opportunities and strategies. Through a collaborative approach, workshop participants will develop a toolkit that can be used for current and future grant opportunities. Resources on funding opportunities and strategies will be provided. Workshop participants are encouraged to share any grant activities in which they are currently engaged. Workshop participants will be provided complimentary enrollment in the LTU 505 course: "Developing Effective Strategies to Get that Grant."

Objectives

Workshop participants will -familiar themselves with the grant procurement process. -complete an inventory that assesses their personal expertise and skills as they related to the grants' process. -distinguish between funding sources "public" (e.g., government-based grants) and "private" (e.g., foundations). -distinguish the relationships among the grant funding source, the applicant, and the home institution. -become aware of key steps in the management of a successful grant. -engage in collegial discussions on strategies and steps to take that ensure successful grant applications and management -contribute to a "checklist" of successful grant strategies
