Abstract: Social awareness permits the learner to feel social integration and to construct a learning community. While the social information can be conveyed in an online learning environment, not much research has been conducted for better representation methods, which allows optimal transmission of social information without interfering with the main learning content. This research studies an optimal visual representation of social information in periphery. This research experimental model captures and compiles the social information in an online learning environment, and presents the information in visual format as peripheral awareness of the learning system. The study will eventually provide an online instructional environment, that will not only help learners accomplish instructional objectives, but will more importantly help them become easily acquainted with each other, and construct a virtual classroom community which is necessary for more successful, continual online learning.
