Abstract: During the Fall 2004 semester, students enrolled in a teacher-preparation program at the University of Texas – Pan American were required to develop a case study based on their field observation experiences and to complete a survey at the end of the semester regarding the perceived benefits and challenges of developing a case study. The purpose of this study was to identify the guidelines instructors need to provide students to enable them to develop high-quality case studies. WebCT was used to enable students to document and share their field observation experiences with each other. A survey was administered at the end of the semester to assess participants’ perceptions of the case study assignment. Results indicated that participants found the case study assignment beneficial and that the guidelines provided by the instructor enabled them to write case studies that were well-written, interesting, insightful and comprehensive. Recommendations on what information and guidelines instructors should give their students to enable them to write outstanding case studies are provided.
