Abstract: Teaching online is a new phenomenon for many higher education instructors. Even experienced traditional teachers find themselves on shaky ground when they are put into an online teaching situation. More classes in higher education are being taught online or are being supplemented with course materials. It takes hard work, tremendous planning and preparation by the instructor to yield a class that works well in the online environment. For most traditional teachers it is like learning how to teach as a novice again. They understand the basic principles of teaching, but are eager to learn new tips or tricks from their colleagues. Teaching online is similar to traditional classroom teaching; however, even the best traditional instructors often find they have feelings of inadequacy when they first begin teaching online. This paper offers tips gathered from the current literature, conferences and conversations with online instructors along with personal experiences and showcases common mistakes to avoid as a new online instructor.
