Abstract: Based on receiving emails from undergraduate technology applications students in a College of Education, the authors were concerned that text messaging shorthand would be used in formal correspondence to parents, administrators, supervisors, and other constituents. It was surmised that students must be comfortable using text messaging shorthand. To that end, a brief survey (in the spirit of action research) investigating the amount of student use of email, cell phone messaging and instant messaging was conducted. Responses were collected from 114 students. Results were mixed but did indicate that virtually all students surveyed had cell phones and many used text messaging shorthand. It was concluded that teacher educators will have to make a point of reminding pre and in service teachers to use normal grammatical conventions in formal written correspondence.
