Abstract: There is a growing deficit between the knowledge of administrators and teachers and the knowledge of their students in regard to the use of technology. When adults in schools know less about technology than their students, it can lead to the banning of technologies, despite the fact that technology will be central to life in the 21st century. The Internet-Based Masters Degree in Educational Technology (iMet) Program utilizes a community of practice approach in teaching iMet courses that has proven to be effective in helping teachers and administrators become familiar with technology and to be capable and open to learning new technologies as technologies emerge. This paper discusses issues related to the challenges of integrating technology into schools, shares how the iMet Program builds communities of practice and shares data that demonstrates the effectiveness of the iMet approach.
