Abstract: This paper investigates the use of an off-the-shelf e-portfolio package as a means of encouraging student teachers to develop their ability to reflect-on and reflect-in their school placements during a one year initial teacher education course. Evidence was garnered against the Northern Ireland Teacher Competence model. All students had a high level of personal competence in using ICT however this mixed methods study revealed the challenging nature of portfolio development in terms of time commitment and the diverse opinions of the students when discussing its future use for formative and summative assessment.
