Abstract: This paper is a report on the findings of a study conducted on the implementation of a portfolio system by a non-traditional developer. To examine the feasibility of open-source development in academic environments, usability data is presented. The use of non-traditional development models and programmers are proposed as an option to encourage the use of management information systems in academic environments.
