Shouting through the fingertips: Computer-mediated discourse in an asynchronous environment
Abstract: Since distance education is thriving in college settings, pedagogists need to investigate best practices of online teaching and learning. Specifically, since research has shown the connection between interaction and course engagement, online teachers need to pay attention to student and teacher stance, or the readiness to respond in a certain way. This research project describes the connected stance, one in which teachers and students are highly engaged in course content and learning. The moves, or purposes for using language in this stance, are characterized and analyzed for context, frequency, and meaningfulness. The authors also suggest a unique way to visualize complex interaction patterns, in order to go beyond surface-level understanding of the language in use.
