Abstract: Online courses, based on constructivist pedagogies, have used discussion as the primary tool for creating a interactive learning environments. Using wikis for collaborative writing provides online educators another powerful tool to support student learning. Although wikis are easy to set up on free hosting sites such as Wikispaces and PBwiki, the effective instructional use of wikis requires planning. This presentation, based on our use of them with both undergraduate and graduate online courses, describes wikis, considers their instructional benefits, and details suggestions for their use.
