Share Paper: Near-Time Podcasting: Using iTunes U to Increase Academic Content Distribution

Abstract: In Fall 2007, the Office of the Web of Teachers College, Columbia University was asked to provide support for video recording of a college-sponsored symposium. In this paper we propose the utilization of iTunes U, an academic-based portal within the iTunes Store of Apple Inc.’s popular music jukebox, to distribute college and university-based event content in near-time. Using consumer-level recording equipment, an audio editor, standardized audio assets, and an Internet connection, events and lectures can be quickly distributed to users across the United States.
