The Missing Manual: Integrating Web 2.0 Technologies into the Curriculum; Bring Your Own Laptop (BYOL)

Abstract: Many of us have heard about Web 2.0, RSS, wikis, podcasts, and blogs. These technologies are now core components in many popular course management systems. This workshop will provide an opportunity for you to learn what these technologies are and the pedagogical benefits of integrating them into your curriculum. You will have an opportunity to discover Web 2.0 resources and draft a lesson using them. The session will conclude with a short presentation about emerging web technologies and trends.

Objectives

The goals for the 3.5 hour workshop include introducing you to what Web 2.0 is, how it can be used in the classroom to engage students, and how to use these tools. After this workshop you should be able to: * articulate in basic terminology to others what Web 2.0 technology is * incorporate Web 2.0 technologies into your curriculum * create interactive lessons using Web 2.0 resources * create and tag podcasts

Topical Outline

* Introduction (5 minutes) * Activity 1: Introduction to Web 2.0 educational technologies (20 minutes) * Activity 2: Creating interactive lessons using Web 2.0 resources (50 minutes) * Activity 3: Discussing lesson-specific application of Web 2.0 technologies (50 minutes) * Activity 4: Creating and tagging podcasts (50 minutes) * Emerging Technology and Trends (15 minutes) * Conclusion (5 minutes) * Break as needed (15 minutes)

Prerequisites

This workshop is intended for anyone with an interest or need to produce Web 2.0 content. Teachers will find it particularly helpful since the focus is on integrating Web 2.0 technology into your curriculum. Teachers and facilitators of teacher development may find the workshop useful as a model for in-house trainings.

Qualifications

Jeanne Samuel is an instructional technologist for the Office of Medical Education at the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, LA. Her current responsibilities include exploring ways to make faculty, student, and staff tasks easier through technology, transitioning course and professional development resources to the web, and posting web content. During her twenty plus years as a computer analyst/consultant, certified technical trainer, and educator, she has been an advocate of innovation in education. Jeanne now is shifting gears to focus on publishing, collaborative learning, and innovation diffusion. To that end, she is working toward a doctorate in Educational Technology at Louisiana State University. Jeanne has been using Web 2.0 technologies since 2005. Jeanne is first author of the chapter Technically Speaking: Supporting 1.0 Teachers in a 2.0 World in the book Wired for Learning: An Educators Guide to Web 2.0 due out summer 2009. Jeanne presented a similar workshop at the SGEA Regional Conference in April 2008.Janice M. Hinson is an associate professor in Educational Theory, Policy, and Counseling at Louisiana State University and coordinator of the educational technology programs in the College of Education. She has an Ed.D from the University of Virginia in Curriculum and Instruction and an M.S. Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from Old Dominion University. She is the author of several publications on the topics of online learning, online learning communities, and professional development for online educators.
