Abstract: Research on student motivation has found that the teacher behaviors are a main factor in developing a student's interest or motivation in a course, but as more instruction moves online, strategies need to be developed to assist in developing the distance learning student’s interest and motivation in the course content. The use of content rich tradebooks as part of a course’s reading assignments can provide an effective motivating and interest developing supplement to an online class, providing experiences and enrichment that go beyond the textbook, helping students to clarify, organize, extend, and enrich the content instruction.
