Abstract: In this paper we describe the EduWear smart-textiles construction kit that allows children and young people to both interact with new “intelligent” materials and understand their technological background. We outline the principles of Constructionism which underpin the design of the learning environment, the pedagogical approach and how the computational materials were developed within the EduWear project. We introduce the construction kit which consists of programming software, smart textiles, sensors, actuators and micro-controllers that enable learners to actually make “smart fashion” artefacts. The EduWear experience in Ireland will be outlined. Three emerging themes are discussed while examining some project examples: the immersive nature of the workshop, the nature of the materials, learner centred workshops.
