Abstract: Student-authored wiki textbooks can support both traditional writing skills and 21st century learning skills like collaboration, higher-order thinking, building a learning community, and authentic writing and publishing. This paper reviews instructor and student narratives in graduate and undergraduate courses in which student-authored wiki textbooks were assigned. Instructors and students alike observed that these assignments supported students’ development of the traditional and 21st century learning skills. In addition, students reported gaining self-confidence in their research and writing skills and their professional and personal self-esteem.
