Abstract: “21st Century Social Studies Education” addresses the transformation needed to change the standard stagnant textbook based social studies classroom into the dynamic and interactive learning environment required for the twenty-first century social studies classroom. This brief paper explores ways that multimedia computer applications are being used in social studies classrooms and how one social studies teacher preparation program is equipping preservice social studies teachers to create an interactive learning environment that engages students and challenges them to think critically and creatively in the 21st century classroom.
