Abstract: The BTRTESOL program is being developed to prepare untrained, novice, volunteer teachers of English as a second/foreign language to be more effective, professional, and successful. The program utilizes a minimalist, connectivist, and problem-based approach to teaching these people “the least they should know” and “where to go to learn more.” The need for this program is great and its potential audience is large. A vast number of untrained people work worldwide as teachers and tutors of English as a second or foreign language in community programs, commercial schools, public libraries, churches, homes, etc. Most of them are unable to enroll in traditional campus-based teacher education programs for reasons related to time, distance, and expense. Consequently, this program utilizes a hybrid delivery system involving (1) traditional paper and Web-based text materials, (2) digital video clips, and (3) interactive Web-based activities to allow for flexible, individualized yet socialized learning at a distance.
