This study explores the use of asynchronous discussion boards in encouraging graduate teacher education candidates to explore the issues experienced by first year teachers. Candidates worked through three weeks of case study prompts designed to build on the narrative of a first year teacher’s introduction to classroom. The prompts were designed to familiarize candidates with the vocabulary unique to the education field and to introduce them to the complex decision-making undertaken on a routine basis by classroom teachers. Results indicate an increased knowledge of the vocabulary unique to the profession and an increased understanding of the decision making demands faced by teachers. Interestingly, results also indicate a correlation with disposition findings of incoming teacher candidates both positive and negative.
