Abstract: West Chester University (WCU) conducted an Apple iPad faculty pilot in Fall 2010. The overall goal of the study was to explore the viability and usability of the tablet as an e-reader. The authors led a group of 10 faculty across all five WCU colleges in this project. The iPad undertaking was a continuation of previous eReader research, with Amazon’s Kindle and Barnes & Noble’s Nook, that the authors have been doing with students, faculty and administrators. Preliminary results from studies conducted with Kindles and Nooks suggest that the WCU campus community was open to incorporating these devices into teaching, learning and scholarship because of their portability as well as the potential for reduced costs of (text)books. This presentation will outline the results of this iPad pilot project, and also highlight how the social networking site, Twitter, was used to keep participants connected throughout the study.
