Abstract: The majority of online courses are designed and developed by teachers or instructional designers who do not have experience with website design. As a consequence many online courses are disorganized; the navigation system is confusing; the pages are cluttered; the links are mislabeled or broken; the graphics are distracting and irrelevant; and the vital information is difficult to find. These factors could easily cause confusion and frustration for students and result in low student achievement and poor instructor evaluations. This presentation provides fundamental web design principles which should be considered in online course development and explains how the incorporation of these principles will improve student experiences and online instructor performance.
