Abstract: This presentation will report a qualitative case study investigating an online learning situation where education students are initiated into the culture of the class, and developed and resolved social conflict, including harsh critique and negative tone, weaved throughout online discussion activities. This presentation will highlight the finding of this study, the social harmonization cycle, which consists of disinhibition, conflict or tension, and normalization. The presentation will also discuss the significant implications for teachers in designing and facilitating distance classes.
