Abstract: **Invited as a Paper from SITE 2011** Recent oil drilling disasters within the Gulf coast region of Northwest Florida have created a renewed focus on science education content associated with environment, ecology, and energy. These topics rely on challenging science course content that requires science educators to be fully prepared with an in-depth understanding of science content and richly experienced in environmental research-based practices. This need, coupled with the goal to improve the academic achievement of students in the area of science, drives the focus for Project SECURE – Securing Environmental Collaborations and Understanding Renewable Energy: Northwest Florida Next Generation Middle School Science Teachers’ Institute. A partnership between two university colleges and three high-need Local Education Agencies will deliver an intensive professional development summer teacher institute using real time and remote access technologies in environmental science.
