Abstract: In our “flat” society—one in which the playing field is leveled by connectivity on an ever-expanding scale—collaboration, communication and creativity have emerged as key skills for success. Interactive technologies that foster these skills should drive secondary teachers of English to examine and apply this new epistemology. Giving students the chance to engage with curriculum in dynamic ways to prepare them for a workplace that emphasizes creativity and communication is not an easy task—especially under the pressures of standardization, which have wreaked havoc on the creativity of both students and teachers. As the educational paradigm shifts to focus on “21st Century skills”, these technologies are highlighted in literature from leaders in the fields of literacy and composition. This paper identifies ways that current literature addresses this new epistemology and offers suggestions for practical application through Web 2.0 tools such as Wikis, Blogs and Microblogs.
