Abstract: This study presents how a digital storytelling-based project was implemented in computer literacy education of a university in Tokyo and examines the impacts on student motivation. The goal of the course was to acquire skills and knowledge in spreadsheet and data analysis with Microsoft Excel. Traditionally, as a final project, each student was required to write an academic report to express what they found by analyzing Excel data with tables and graphs in the format of Microsoft Word. However, students’ motivation for the final project was relatively lower than the other project during the term. Therefore, in order to enhance students’ motivation for the final project, a digital storytelling-based project was introduced in an experimental group. The findings showed that it led to students’ higher motivation for learning, compared to the traditional Word-based report.
