Young children and technology exposure outside of the school setting
Friday, March 11 1:30 PM-2:30 PM
The paper presents different types of technology used by children at home and outside the home environment. Children are exposed to technology in the home from the time they are born. Children are also exposed to technology in many areas outside of the home environment. From riding in a car, shopping in a store, eating at a restaurant, or going to the doctor’s office, technology is prevalent throughout everyday life. We discuss a few technology aspects that need to be considered from a developmental perspective such as appropriateness and educational value. We also present a few questions to get the round table discussion started about potential advantages and disadvantages or technology use at a young age. Here are some questions to start the discussion. What are possible advantages and disadvantages of technology use with young children? How can technology be improved to address children developmental needs? What possible educational implications do the use of technology outside schools present?
