Abstract: In the ‘knowledge society’ learners’ needs for knowledge, skills and competencies are changing and different learning opportunities are available. This symposium aims to explore the nature of new pedagogy incorporating ICT that is required to enable learning in these developing scenarios. Furthermore the symposium aims to examine the implications of these changes in pedagogy for: teachers’ professional knowledge and competencies; changing roles of teachers and students and teacher education programmes and to present examples of how these challenges may be met. New models of pedagogy and professional development from different countries and contexts will be examined by drawing on research projects on which the presenters are currently working. These projects range across primary, secondary and higher education as well as pre-service and in-service teacher education. The research findings that will be discussed encompass classroom-based as well as distance and blended learning approaches.
