Abstract: Despite massive efforts to overhaul education in the past two decades, American students still consistently show mediocre performance in mathematics as compared to their counterparts from other industrialized countries (American Institutes for Research, 2005). A key factor that contributes to poor student performance is the gap in teachers' knowledge of mathematics and domain appropriate teaching strategies (American Institutes for Research, 2005; National Council of Teacher Quality, 2008).
