Abstract: The purpose of this study is to address the relationship between digital cheating and online assessments in distance education. Distance education has been pressured by accreditation agencies to show evidences of the quality of online instruction and integrity of assessments. Yet, the exponential growth of distance education has brought the challenge of providing procedures and means of testing that fulfill both security of student information and academic integrity of online testing. This paper provides distance educators and instructional designers with insights on digital cheating, strategies to minimize cheating and the role of the testing systems on cheating. Practical implications for researchers and education are discussed.
