Abstract: Novice online students need mentoring to empower them to be better students as they study and do coursework online. According to Lynch (2002), “ a key role change that faculty must begin to embrace in order to be effective in the online environment is that of facilitator or mentor”(p.1) Mentoring is not easy to accomplish with online students because of the lack of opportunity to be physically together as a class. According to Anderson (2010), distance learning is becoming more popular on higher education campuses with approximately 25% students taking online courses Mentoring online students is an important factor in their success. Mentoring and coaching students is effective to keeping them engaged and productive (American Library Association, 2008). The virtual library is an ideal mentoring tool because it allows students to find information for their classes easily because it can be found in one central place.
