Engaging secondary learners through inquiry-based modules and NASA content
Abstract: The 21st Century workplace challenges students to be collaborative problem solvers and to think systematically. Relevant and engaging lessons that reflect those needs must provide rich, new opportunities for inquiry-based study. The collaborative Summer professional development project described here provided such a pedagogical mix of inquiry, collaboration, instructional technology, reflection, formative assessment and opportunities for practice, according to teachers and graduate students who completed Phase One of the project. The integrated summer professional development experience for secondary STEM teachers brought together University and secondary school communities including faculty, graduate students in education and STEM fields, STEM teachers, curriculum specialists, principals, and administrators to address a national challenge to provide engaging learning experiences in STEM areas based on the inquiry model and NASA resources to secondary learners.
