Abstract: In its brief history, American social studies education has contrasting purposes (matter, method, and citizenship preparation) and paradigm (universal standard or adaptation to local interests). One constant has been the pursuit of the concrete reality of materials for practice: at first textbooks and other print materials and later additional media such as film.
