Abstract: This research focuses on mentoring pre-service teachers in creating technology-rich, constructivist learning environments that use Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers and geocaching activities to engage students in the learning process. The study also provides examples of classroom activities that incorporated GPS units and geocaching in a local cemetery to learn about the local history. Participants learned step by step skills to create lesson activities that integrate GPS and geocaching activities to increase student understanding of curricular content. Finally, the project provided participants with additional important skills including map-reading, map making, reading a compass, and basic GPS navigation.
