Abstract: Middle Schoolers Out to Save the World (MSOSW) is a U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) Project funded to span 2008 – 2011. Analysis of pre-post data gathered from 2009-2010 middle school students indicates that standby power monitoring activities are especially effective in promoting STEM discipline interests for girls. For both boys and girls, factors related to local school environments strongly influence the effectiveness of the project. Thus far there have not been large changes in STEM career interests but improvements in the curriculum are continuing to address this issue.
