Abstract: This study explores the use of digital storytelling with middle school students in two rural Southern communities. Digital storytelling is easy to implement and is an engaging and powerful means for allowing adolescents to define their voice as authors. In this study, students worked in shared writing groups to create digital stories representing their views on teen life in small, rural towns. The students’ stories were analyzed for descriptive themes. While some themes may be posited as unique to a rural population, other themes were typical of the developmental age regardless of geographical context.
