Abstract: This paper provides an overview of the importance of immediacy behaviors in both traditional and online learning environments. Immediacy is defined as a perceived closeness between two people and can be comprised of both verbal and nonverbal elements. Immediacy is linked to social presence which, in turn, is linked to affective learning; an important element in the learning process. As online courses become more popular, it is important that they be designed with this approach in mind and that immediacy cues, since they have an effect on affective learning, have an important place in the student / teacher relationship.
