Designing Augmented Reality Experiences in Authentic Learning Environments
Abstract: What is augmented reality and how can it be used to make authentic learning environments even more engaging and meaningful? What are the opportunities and challenges associated with the development of augmented reality experiences? Through this demonstration, participants will use mobile devices (provided) to explore augmented reality experiences designed for 3rd-5th graders at School In The Park, a standards-aligned program working with two urban elementary schools in San Diego. These augmented reality experiences focus on two distinct learning environments; 1) the Elephant Odyssey at the San Diego Zoo and 2) the natural resources of the indigenous Kumeyaay people at the San Diego History Center. Both of these are good examples of using technology to provide experiences that would not be possible in the actual environment. Participants will have opportunities to identify capabilities of augmented reality in education.
