Developing Digital-Age Teacher Competencies: Online Collaborative Instructional Design Teams
Abstract: Online enrollment in distance education courses continues to rise, and there is a pressing need for ongoing research that investigates the elements of effective online learning environments. This mixed methods study examines graduate students' attitudes toward collaborative learning before and after completing a collaboratively designed online strategies course in teacher education. The preservice and inservice teachers worked in content area design teams, fulfilling rotating weekly roles related to the creation of lesson plans illustrating the various models of teaching being studied within a wiki environment. This research on online collaborative learning supported by wiki technology offers a look at crucial design considerations that lead to improved student attitudes toward online collaborative learning and mimic the authentic tasks that teachers perform.
