Abstract: The study investigated the use of rapid prototyping (RP) to design discussion board activities for an online environmental course. The activities were developed and prototyped both before and during the course. Using the RP model, three lab activities were designed to enrich online discussions using a course management system. The first activity was a synchronous virtual class fieldtrip to a Second Life location called Tox Town. The second activity was an asynchronous virtual scavenger hunt to Etopia Island in Second Life. The third activity was an online visit to a local power plant near the student’s home. An evaluation of the initial prototyped activities resulted in the redesign of the next activity and course objectives for the discussion board. Included are discussions on the effectiveness of using RP process to improving online discussions as well as suggestions for using virtual field trips.
