Abstract: Over the years, the term inclusive has come to mean including students with disabilities in regular classrooms designed for students without disabilities. The goal of this workshop is help teachers create an active, inclusive, learning-friendly environment that welcomes, nurtures, and educates ALL students. This flexible, hands-on workshop is for K-12 educators wishing to learn how to enhance their ability to effectively integrate their active boards into the curriculum to enhance ALL students’ conceptual understanding. A variety of activities and best-practices discussions will provide for a very thorough understanding of how to use Active Boards to adhere to Individualized Education Programs (IEP) modifications and create dynamic learning environments for ALL students.

Objectives

The overall objective of this workshop is for participants to discover how to build and establish an active inclusive classroom. Teaching strategies such as differentiating instructions, discovery learning, active learning, and collaborative learning will be integrated within the workshop to allow teachers to learn how to create active inclusive environment within the traditional teaching and learning strategies. It is imperative that modifications in relation to classroom setting and structure as well as assessments are made to accommodate special needs students. Participants will be provided a holistic view and strategies needed to implement the trainings in their classrooms to create an active inclusive learning environment.

Topical Outline

By the end of this workshop teachers should be able to: •Explain to a colleague why we should strive for an inclusive academic environment. •Select appropriate pedagogical and professional development strategies to help create an active inclusive academic environment •Create a classroom environment based on the concept of universal design for instruction, which will minimize difficulties for students with disabilities, enabling them to fully participate in the learning process •Make connections between successful classroom management and student achievement. •Understand Individualized Education Programs to help students achieve success and determine what role educational technology can play to address student needs •Function as an active facilitators for students’ active hands-on learning via an Active Board •Structure lessons to promote learning via effective integration of active boards

Prerequisites

Participation is open to all K-12 teachers, ideally these teachers should have access to active boards in their classrooms to ensure that the skills learn can be applied in an effort to enhance teaching and learning.

Qualifications

The first presenter is an Assistant Professor in the School of Education at a Southeastern Metropolitan University. Prior to having an academic appointment this presenter that in an inclusive high school classroom and learned various ways to use educational technology to enhance teaching and learning. It is through this experience that this presenter focuses their research interest on enhancing STEM education via effective use of educational technology as well as cyber-learning and instructional design. This presenter is well versed in conducting workshops for educators that are engaging, informative, but more importantly practical which ensures that teachers will apply the knowledge in their respective classrooms. The second presenter is a former Special Needs instructor of ten years with the Atlanta Public School District who taught both self-contained and interrelated Special Needs models with primary focuses on Language Arts and Math. Currently this presenter is serving as a consultant who extensively travels throughout the country to deliver the highest quality ActivClassroom training to teachers and school districts. This presenter is a certified Promethean consultant and is well versed on helping teachers use active boards to create an active inclusive environment.
