Abstract: The present study examined the influence a federally funded technology implementation project had on high school students’ perceptions of their technology skills and technology use in the classroom in six rural school districts in Texas. The results show that providing the schools more hardware, software, and professional development, via a technology grant, significantly decreased students’ perceptions of their technology skills. Conversely, students’ perceived using technology more in core subject areas. Students reported participating in technology activities primarily in English/Language Arts classes. These findings suggest that high school students may need to be provided with more opportunities to practice their technology skills in all core subject area classes.
