Location-aware technology: learning Geography in a real digital space outside the classroom

Abstract: The use of new mobile technologies is still in its infancy in secondary schools and there is limited research evidence of the educational and pedagogical benefits to pupils’ learning. This qualitative study focuses on the use of mediascapes to teach a topic in geography to a group of 16 pupils aged 15-16 years old due to sit a formal national examination. Observation, photographs, focus group and whole class interviews were used to collect the data. Activity Theory acted as a lens to structure the analysis of the data and the findings report the cognitive and affective impact of m-learning on pupils’ learning of the content material and gaining wider skills.
