Abstract: Though not yet an established feature of secondary education in the United States, the teaching of the subject of informatics is a well-established academic endeavor in Europe and elsewhere globally. In Ukraine, informatics has been an official component of secondary public education since 1985. This study provides the professional characteristics of informatics teachers in Ukraine as viewed from the vantage point of a state-sponsored regional in-service teachers’ professional development center for the purpose of identifying unique attributes of the sample group. The study was conducted in February – April 2010 at the M. Ostrogradsky Poltava Regional Pedagogical Institute, in Poltava, Ukraine while the researchers were part of a U.S. Fulbright-sponsored teaching program at the Institute.
