Abstract: The development of educational applications that are grounded in accepted pedagogical principles is a challenging and complex undertaking. This paper presents a new educational framework for teaching mathematics, which is based on Bloom/Anderson’s taxonomy and current pedagogical views of mathematics education. With this underpinning framework, along with the capability of multimedia technology for presenting multiple representations, and using children’s literature for teaching mathematics, it has been possible to develop an interactive multimedia educational software that appears to meet the needs of both students and teachers in junior primary classrooms. This application was trialled for teaching various mathematics concepts in five different primary schools in Australia. A detailed analysis of the development process and various components of the application are also presented in this article, followed by the pedagogical and technological results of using the application in classroom settings.
