Abstract: This paper reports the development of a Master Instructor Certificate program for university instructors. The professional development program combined online coursework and face-to-face skills-based workshops. Training in the following areas was incorporated into the program: 1) Planning Effective Instruction, 2) Creating Effective Learning Environments, 3) Assessing and Evaluating Students and Instruction, and 4) Understanding the University Context and Faculty Role. The “flipped classroom” approach encouraged participants to review and reflect on resources during the online coursework prior to taking the related hands-on workshop. The instructors were then able to come to the workshops thoroughly informed and prepared build their teaching and collaboration skills in each of the program’s topic areas. A discussion of the development of the certificate program, future challenges, formative evaluation results, and future directions for the certificate program will be provided.
