Screencasting as an Approach to User Testing and Peer Feedback
Abstract: This study investigates the use of a free, web-based screencasting application for usability testing of peer-designed websites. The application, which allows individuals to create and share recordings of their screen navigation and verbal commentary, was utilized in two sections of the same graduate level web design and development course in a blended learning environment. Usability testing was conducted in a face-to-face setting in one scenario while asynchronous screencasting was employed in the other. Findings demonstrate a greater amount of critical feedback produced in the screencasting scenario. Both observed and potential affordances and constraints are discussed in the implications of this approach to usability testing.
