Abstract: Advances in technology have broken down the barriers of time and space for teaching and learning. The changes, shifts, and transformations in technology are exciting because they have created new and powerful experiences for teaching and learning. As technologies allow learning opportunities to occur anytime and anywhere, they uniquely influence the styles of learning. Using mixed methods, this study investigated the factors that promoted student engagement in an online learning environment. Data sources and analysis included questionnaires, interviews with students, mid semester and end of semester course feedback, online discussions, and written papers. The study found that the instructor’s online presence, the community of learners, and the organization, practicality, and accessibility of the online learning environment promoted student engagement. Based on the findings, this study provides practical suggestions in creating authentic, engaging, and challenging online learning environments.
